A second universe (dubbed earth 2) has opened a portal to invade and pillage Earth 1 of all its radianite without regard for the devestation they bring, leaving earth 1 to suffer the loss of its leading energy source. Earth 2, a world in which radiants revolted and overthrew the humans.
