Nico Di Angelo was born in a town where his dark powers to summon the dead were shunned. He was treated as a demon child for his whole life. Yet, when he has just about given up all hope of escaping his fate here, he meets someone who can change his life. Will Solace, a kid with the power of healing, wants to rescue Nico. He is willing to give up everything he has, including his life, only if it means Nico is safe.

The death of Nico's first and closest friend Jason Grace puts a sudden end to the sunshine that currently brightens Nico's life for once. His death triggers a lot of things for him, and shines light on a lot of his unresolved trauma. Will Nico be able to make it through this without his mental stability completely breaking once and for all? Will Nico be able to let people in enough to help him get through it? And what about the mysterious dreams that Nico keeps having of his mom? And who really is this little girl that knows nothing about her past? In this sequel to Out of the Shadows, Nico sees familiar faces and revisits past places, but at least this time he has Will along for the ride.
