Losing oneself in a forest to escape a troubling life is not something a person expects to end well. It's not a place to find a new way forward, but instead a place to end one's state of being.
Casting yourself into exile, you imagined your life was essentially over. There was nothing to go back to - no home, no friends, no family. All you had left was your body, a blade, and a forest where the trails picked up and disappeared. Endless wandering with nothing but your thoughts and the waning daylight.
By the time you came to rest at the riverside, you were certain you were ready for your journey to end.
