What if there was a second half of your life that you had no idea existed?

On her 15th birthday, Brynn Callayn wakes up a normal girl, but as the day wears on, strange things start happening. She then discovers a shocking secret; she has superpowers! She takes on the alter-ego of MistDrifter and teams up with a new superhero that popped up over the weekend who goes by the name of FlameStone. Together, they are thrown into a perilous battle between good and evil, all while keeping their identities and secrets hidden from their friends, family and everyone in between. Can they save the city? Or will everything they know and love crumble beneath them?

Temper was always different, but not for all the normal reasons. For one thing, she had fiery red hair. That wasn't the only reason though- she also had a strange power, the power to control fire. She could create it, move it, and was immune to it. She could even absorb it. But her life wasn't all peaches and cream. When she was young, she was taken from her family because of her power. They probably thought she was dead and she didn't know if they were alive either. She escaped five years ago when she was twelve, but hadn't gone back to her family for fear of their safety. Now she was seventeen, living in the streets. Her life was bleak, that is until she met Nick. All she knew was that he was after her, but she had no idea why. Her life was about to get a whole lot more interesting. (Told from both Temper's and Nick's point of views)

"What if she goes to the cops, Dad? That bruise on her face is enough to get you arrested and charged with assault." "What? You mean when she tripped over the mess you made in the kitchen?" His smile is so wicked that it chills me to my core. "She ain't going to the cops. Hell, she'll probably be back here tomorrow." "You're a bastard," I whisper, tears filling my eyes. "No wonder Mom left! She probably couldn't bear to spend another second with-" I'm pushed to the floor. I scramble backwards as he approaches me, his cheeks scarlet with rage, his pupils the size of needle points. In fourteen years, I've never seen him this mad. Friendship doesn't change when your bestie becomes a fire-wielding champion, but a lot of other stuff does. Like having to put 'kidnapped by idiots with powers' on your weekly schedule. And enduring said idiots' cliché monologues while inwardly roasting their interior decorating skills. Hey, I'm Mira. That's right, Miracle Simmons. BFF to America's favorite superhero celeb; Firebird. (Bu-bye, Chris Evens, your reign is over.) You've probably heard of her, but not of me. That's okay! I'm her bestie! It's my job to make sure she doesn't burn herself out fighting morons, keep her focused in her actual real life, and try to show her that she doesn't have to pick every fight. ... that changes everything Sarah was starting her junior year of high school. Looking at herself in the mirror, she saw a pretty average blonde haired, blue eyed, teenager. She was neither in the popular group, nor one of the many cliched outsiders. Sarah was a nobody. She liked to blend in and lay low. It was her way out of not only this town, but her house. No one knew it, but her father was a high functioning alcoholic that often took his anger out on his family. With her older sister now in college, it had turned to her more often. Laying low in general was a good strategy. Across town, Ryan was prepping for his final year in high school. While he wasn't the stereotypical quarterback of the football team, he did fit into the popular crowd. His sports of choice included basketball and soccer, either of which might line him up for a scholarship next year. Ryan had a group of close friends and a lot of adoring acquaintances. It wasn't easy juggling his athletics and keeping the grades up, but he was just that good. The supporting parents didn't hurt either. It might be a cliché romance, but it will be fun to see what the year and beyond holds. ------------------------------------------ This is a story I wrote years ago, or at least partially wrote. As I transcribe it here, I have tried to update it a bit and give the characters/story more depth than what I had when I was younger. Hopefully it all gets pulled together!

More about the lives they lead without the masks. But just keep in mind, people who live in the world have all different skin colours. Do not assume my characters are of one unless I state them explicitly. and diversity is welcome here in my novel! Anyhow, back to the story. Ever wonder where supervillains go after their fight with the hero? What about the other side of the story? It's not like they sit in their lair cackling all day and planning how to kidnap reporters. What about the lives they lead? And instead of just focusing on that, what if the superhero and the supervillain knew each other? I mean, can they see behind the mask? No, so their identities are secret. So what if the hero and villain were best friends? What if they were roommates? What if they were falling for each other? And what happens when they find out? Now, I assume you know all of these questions will be answered in this book. But hold on. It's going to take a while. You're in for a bumpy ride. And if any of you got any of the references in this description, give yourself a pat on the back. That is a beautiful thing. And if you can name all the references in this book, you truly are a gift to mankind. Fangirl out.

How much of a mess can she make, and will she be able to clean it up? This is being written for the Open Novella Contest 2024, for prompt #87: You come from a family of highly respected heroes. All three of your big brothers are known as powerhouses, but you rarely see them since they're always saving the city. One day you realize that the only way to see all of your brothers is to become a villain. Turns out you're better at it than you thought, and family dinners suddenly become the most amusing time of day.
