Centuries ago it was a sign of respect and power. People looked up to you. If you were one of the Marked you were considered lucky.
But things have changed. 
Now the tattoo is a sign of evil.
Today it's a signal of fear and darkness. People cower when they see you. If you are one of the Marked you are considered cursed.
