“What did I do to deserve this?” Her innocent voice was quiet and broken. “Why do I have to suffer?”
Taking a deep breathe, I looked into her ocean blue, tear-filled eyes, breaking my heart all over again.
“Because up in heaven, there aren’t enough angels. And every now and then, someone down here on this lonely planet of ours, something beautiful is made. Something with the most compassionate of hearts,” Leaning down, I kissed her left cheek softly, her little sniffles fading away. “The most pure of souls,” I moved to her right cheek, placing another feather-light kiss. “And the kindest of personalities.” I once again moved to her forehead.
“You’re an angel born on earth. And God has to make sure that no matter how much pain you endure, your compassion, purity and kindness will be enough for you to fly up to heaven so that you can sing with the other angels in heaven, save the lives of others, or in some cases, watch them die and take them up there to live with you.”
“But I don’t want to go up to heaven! I don’t want to leave you! I love you, Darcy.” She said quietly, her breaths picking up speed in her panic.
“I won’t be gone for long, Angel. When you leave, wait for me there. I will do everything in my power to be like you, so that one day, I’ll fly up to heaven too.”
“Promise?”
