Phife's hometown is safe. It may be nothing more than a melting-pot of bums and runaways, but from her room at the top of the pristine Askan Cathedral, it is her best chance at a better life; one that doesn't involve being her family's shadow. It takes a rebel wannabe, a prodigy with much bigger ambitions, and local stray-turned-legend for her to realize that her plans for a life of freedom involve an unexpected side plot. Aska is on the verge of a major water famine, one that will effect each of the land's nine species equally. In an otherwise colorless world, the Green Land is the nation's only hope for a new water source, they just have to find it. Phife finds herself pulled into the crowd of lake-seekers, hungry for clean water and starving for coin. Separated from the group, a government conspiracy surrounding her own father, and an unanticipated danger lurking in the Green Land cause Phife and her friends to question the premise of it all.

Primsharah will become the center of a deadly play, with the powers of the gods themselves at stake ... *** Refusing to watch his family crumble beneath the weight of poverty, Arran has resorted to stealing from the rich to provide for his mother and sister. His ability to bend light prevents him from being caught ... until one day, he is. His captors have no intention of turning him in, though, instead making him an offer that he cannot resist, but which will change the course of his future forever. Meanwhile, Princess Serafina, heir to the throne of Primsharah, welcomes an unusual suitor in the royal palace. This stranger brings a dangerous gift for her father: the Sphere of Truths, one of the ten World Artifacts, created by the gods themselves. As the Shah sinks deeper into his obsession with the Sphere, Inna starts experiencing visions about a thief stealing another Artifact, the Amulet of Doom. A deathly curse is bound to the Amulet, and its theft will set in motion a series of events which might destroy Primsharah for good ... and the world along with it. Together, Arran and Inna flee across the desert to find out who is stealing the Artifacts and why. But Arran's time is limited as the curse flows through his veins, with no hope for salvation save for the stubborn princess who is determined to see his survival. Magic, desert and creatures of myth weave a tale of fragile hope, large-scale betrayal and fierce friendship between two people whose fates should never have crossed paths at all.

When the winged creatures fell out of the sky, most of humanity was wiped out in a single day. All of those over the age of thirteen were consumed, their souls lost to eternal purgatory. After humanity's fall, the winged creatures claimed their world. The surviving children were spared and imprisoned into secret locations. The younger humans were raised and conditioned to be nothing but food, but the older humans still remembered a world without suffering, a world where they had families and choices. Aurora is a nanny at one of those locations. She has helped to raise children for the last eight years, since her own capture at twelve. On her twentieth birthday, she faces the most heart-breaking transition of all; a transfer to the King's palace. Knowing she must now serve the winged creatures as a source for food, she stands before King Cain, the most feared winged creature and leader of all his species.
