Tord comes to pay his apologies for what he did in the past. They forgive him, but Matt is keeping an eye on him. By that, he's making sure he won't try anything with Tom. Why should he care? Ok so I gave up on the description for this story but it's at least something- Tord comes back from the Army to see his "old friends" again.
