“Why do I do what I do? Oh, Officer Evans, surely you know that by now. Life is short. I serve as a reminder. A messenger, if you will. No one’s immortal. Not you, nor I, nor anyone. We have to stop pretending that we are. That’s the tricky thing about life. It seems so long, so frustrating, so meaningless, but yet when it’s over, we’re left there. Feeling cheated. Life can be buzzing along mundanely, when sudden, it’s just . . . over. It’s just gone. You cease. Your life is extinguished. All for what? What does it all matter? That’s the question. That’s why I do what I do.The innocence I kill, the women I rape, the horrible deeds I’ve done . . . They’re all for a reason. To serve a purpose. To remind you, them, whoever, to remind everyone that they’re not immortal. And that they could be next. To live your life while you can. Before it’s too late. And I’m proud of my work. I’ve taken lives, sure, loads of them. But I’ve improved the lives of the people around them. I’ve reminded them that though their friend is gone, they aren’t. They’re still very much alive. And they should take advantage of that. That’s why I take pride in my work, Officer. That’s why I always leave a solid gold pocket watch at every crime scene. So that you know it’s me. And you know it’s just me doing my civil duty. You’re welcome.”
