Wilks Lohrkenstein never really planned on becoming a doctor, but when his wife falls ill with a new plague, he tries to learn all that he can about medicine to try and save her. His efforts were in vain however, because she died before he could save her. His wife's death devasted Wilks and drove him utterly insane and hellbent on treating illness and wounds, whatever the cost. Because of his struggling efforts to become a doctor, a demon gives him a deal he cannot refuse. Dr. Lohrkenstein can heal anyone from any illness or wound, but in return he must steal the souls of a hundred victims for the demon.
This novel takes place in the fictional country of Drekland, set in a technologically advanced version of the late 1800s, during a civil war, a plague, and other terrible conflicts and problems, leaving the country in almost complete chaos.
