There is a world where your long-term mental state is shown above your head, represented by either a plus- meaning happy, or a minus- meaning depressed. People with a plus are known as Positives and people with a minus are known as Negatives. No one knows how they got there, when they got there, or why they're there in the first place. It's just the way it works.
Dan Howell is the biggest Positive in school, constantly happy with amazing grades and kind friends and a supportive family. Phil Lester is the biggest Negative in school, suffering from severe depression and anxiety which constantly gets in the way of his school work, no friends and a shit home life, meaning he gets bullied everyday. Dan is determined to fix that, even if it means sacrificing himself for Phil.
