It has taken Gordon Zane, a former U.S. Marine Corps officer, 15 years to keep his promise of "stopping by some day" to pay his respects to the wife of his first "casualty of war" in South Vietnam in 1967. He never could have imagined that a short flight of steps would be such an obstacle to fulfilling that promise.
