Story of a town near the Chernobyl Disaster...before they knew to evacuate and the story surrounding the local lake.

***

Some said the local lake had been enchanted; others said it must have been the weather. The neighborhood cops were trying to keep it quiet but I swear that I could hear the laughter still.

I always believed Andrei was the smartest person in our town. I believed he would someday be a legend. And I was right. But not in the way I'd imagined.

The local kids would laugh and make fun of him, they called him 'the genius next door'. He was different, and awkward and spoke about things they couldn't understand. I knew he could hear them, but he never acknowledged it, he would just hold his breath and count to ten.

The secrets in his eyes were never spoken and only I and the lake knew them now.
