Daniel Howell is in his first year at university. He is clinically depressed, but hiding from his only friend who is also his girlfriend who he relies on. She seems to take some of the pain away. Phil Lester is in the same class as Dan and has always admired everything about him, but stays in the closet due to his homophobic parents. He desperately wants Dan to notice him; until one day he does.
