Bethany West was not a normal girl.
She could see things. The creatures she'd read about in story books turned out to be real, after her father's death. She hadn't been imagining the monsters that would hide in her closet while she slept. Some would try to hurt her. Some would protect her. Some would talk to her, ask her to be friends.
It's not as if Bethany could help it. It wasn't something she could control. Olivia had called her a liar, had told her to stop making things up. They were there. She could see them. She could hear them. They would tuck her into bed at night and tell her stories when her mother didn't. They would whisper lullabies in her ear and kiss her forehead whenever she had nightmares about the accident. They were real.
But by the time Olivia believed Bethany, it was too late.
