During my time in a Creative Writing class, I was assigned a poetry portfolio project. We had to write two of each of the five poetry types: sonnets, limericks, odes, haikus, and free verses.
I chose to give the whole portfolio the theme of the phoenix rising from the ashes to be reborn. Each poetry type was given a smaller theme that related to the overall theme. So this portfolio is meant to flow similarly to how a story would.
•Sonnets: the pain/conflict
•Limericks: feeling bad
•Odes: the worst point of the pain
•Haikus: recovering
•Free verses: coming out stronger after everything

The Phoenix Girl (Editing)
"Have I ever told you the story of The Phoenix Girl?" My Grandfather asked. "No, you have not," I said. My Grandfather was like any other old man, but his mind was far from ordinary. All grandfathers are alike, each one tells you stories about wars or the good old days. But not my Grandfather. He was a storyteller, but his stories were always different. He would just come up with the stories, and they would be so enrapturing to me. It hooked me from the beginning until the moment I had to leave. But then one day, he told me a story that would change everything for me and my Father. This story called the Phoenix Girl. It's a story of a girl who goes through hardships and struggles in her everyday life. They punish her for things she has no control over, but then she faces it all. She is reborn from the ashes of the flames that had consumed her. She is stronger. But what if this isn't just some story that my grandpa came up with? What if something connected her to my family? What will happen now that the truth is out there? Why was this story so important? What will change? Who is this Phoenix Girl? It tries to make sense of the past and explores trauma head on in an unfiltered way that leaves no room for denial. It's a documentation of my entire life, moments both sun kissed and dark. "They say life is fragile, and we're not all guaranteed tomorrows." My name is Phoenix, and despite my name being a bird that rises from the ashes, I can barely rise from my bed on a good day. I was born to be fearless, but I am in fact, a fearful wimpy girl who can't keep her emotions in check. I'm convinced God is a sadist. My life is okay-ish. I mean if you consider a suicide attempt, a coward father, my overbearing family, my brother's vengeful ex-girlfriend, my amazing best friend and her asshole of brother, okay.
