Ellie is 14 years old and recently orphaned. Both her parents were killed when they were in Germany. They were stuck in Germany and were in hiding since 1938. During those years Ellie learned how to fend on her own and stay in hiding with help of her friend Raziel Schmidt. Fortunately they survived. On their journey fleeing to France they are rescued by a female officer, who is a translator, Claire Debois. On Ellie's parents will she was to go live with her uncle she never met. She doesn’t know her uncle Joseph, but she must find a way back to America to find him. Her father and her uncle got in a fight long ago and swore never to speak again. When France is attacked, Debois is ordered to flee to England and find the lieutenant Josy, of the1st marine division and travel back to the U.S with them.
