Sahara lives in a society without men-a flawless utopia; at least, that's what everyone keeps telling her. But Sahara knows perfection comes at a cost, and she's spent her entire life acting the part of a warden's obedient daughter. She is expected to follow her mother's footsteps, to become a warden of the incarcerated men, known as Brutes.

But when Sahara comes face to face with a real-life Brute, she realizes he is nothing like the government's terrifying and revolting depictions. Desperate to know why, Sahara makes a deal: she will keep his secret, but only if he answers some questions.

The terrifying relationship between prosecutor and subject slowly morphs into a dangerous love, one that distorts the laws of right and wrong. When suspicions grow high and the Brute's life is in jeopardy, Sahara is faced with the ultimate dilemma: to save herself or her forbidden love.

During the year of their eighteenth birthday, the women of Grayson must undergo The Awakening- a ceremony in which they are chosen by their mates. In a patriarchy where men rule everything and women are seen as nothing more than instruments for childbearing, Mia has no say in who her husband will be. When the man who chooses her turns out to be cruel and abusive, there is nothing she can do to leave the violent relationship. As is the law in Grayson, she is bound to her husband until death. Feeling trapped and alone in her marriage, Mia finds comfort in her house servant, Ruby. As they grow close, a forbidden love blossoms. Mia wants to flee her marriage and be with Ruby, but fear holds her back. If the government found out about her prohibited relationship, she and Ruby would be sentenced to death. She wants to find happiness, but not at such a high cost. Mia embarks on a journey of romance, betrayal, and rebellion as she tries to find her voice in a place where women were meant to be silent. © Dawn Norwell "Though I'd spent my entire life denying it, I could no longer live a lie. I didn't love my husband. I could never love him. After repressing it for so long, I finally accepted that I was gay. I had always been gay. And no number of threats or scare tactics from the government would change the fact that I would always be gay." _______________________________________________________________________________ "Horribly fascinating!" "Wow, this is so chilling. I can't wait to read more!" "There are ways in which the real world has treated women and homosexuals that mirrors what is happening here. I find it disgusting, intolerable - and that means stories like this need to exist." "This does a great job showing some seriously underrepresented issues in the world :)" #1 in future fantasy 2nd place in The Black and Gold Leaf Awards 3rd place in The Creativity Awards Warning- This story contains domestic violence and sexual assault.

In the quiet desert village of Dey, living among the sand dunes and mirages, existed an anomaly - me. I was different, born without the ability to read, write or keep long memories. My scientist father hailed my uniqueness as a miracle, but my life was far from ordinary. To the village, I was just an oddity, a walking puzzle with missing pieces. My only solace was my best friend, always standing by me, his unspoken love for me etched in his affectionate gaze. We lived under a cruel regime with a population no more than a hundred. Every year, one of us would be chosen on the Counting Day, a ceremonious banishing ritual, to become yet another outcast to the floating prison island far off in the ocean - our village's dreaded version of population control. Our past criminals, defiant to government, and more terrifyingly, our loved ones gone missing, were thought to inhabit that island, their fate, a terrifying enigma. This year, as the Counting Day approached unrelentingly, and my loved one's life rested on borrowed time, I made a decision. I volunteered to be casted out. It was my turn to face the unknown with a hidden purpose - to locate my lost father who was sent there years ago.
