Dan was 13 when he unwillingly sacrificed his soul to the devil, forced by his parents. 3 years later, Dan wasn't expecting Satan herself to be standing on his doorstep with Dan's contract in her hands, in need of a favour.
Dan doesn't know if he has it in him to let Satan take Phil's soul, despite Dan's agreement, but he doesn't know what lengths he will go to stop it from happening either. He knows Satan needs this - supernatural souls are extremely rare and important, after all. But, Dan knows what it's like to not have a soul - torture. It's not something he wants anyone else to go through, especially the boy who's been on the run for 2 years avoiding it.
