As punishment the enchantress condemned her to a physical appearance of a monster as ugly as her inside,  and this curse would only be lifted wen she learned to be a real princess, good,  benevolent and humble

Years have gone by,  with Emerald in isolation with no apparent help or hope

Everyone that set eyes on her fled raving about monsters

She became angry and bitter
