His misgivings grow in this strange place and strange people, compounded by a community under threat from an unscrupulous Government representative. Although there exists one point of interest, the mysterious cairn at the top of the hill that, despite being forbidden and the threat of a vicious wild dog, fascinates Jack. When the secret of the ancient cairn is revealed it changes Jack and the characters he meets forever.
