Willowmist has just become a warrior of MoonClan. Tonight is her first Gathering as a full - fledged warrior, and she expects it to be special.
But what she gets is beyond even her realm of imagination. As her leader is announcing her new warrior name, a shrill, unearthly cry is heard that sets everyone's fur on end. The cats hurry over to the source of the noise and see a mutilated warrior laying on the ground. The murderer is nowhere to be seen.
Willowmist returns to camp, still dazed about what had happened. As a few days have passed, cats start to whisper about her and avoid her. They think she is cursed because the cry was heard as her name was announced. She tries to explain that it wasn't her fault, but no one listens except her sister, Summerpelt, and her friend Clearsong. Willowmist sets off looking for clues, knowing that her Clan will only accept her if she finds the murderer and reveals him or her.
Yet what she finds, no one should ever have to know...
