It's 1956. 14 year old David and his older brother of 17 years Michael Harrison, get into all kinds of mischief with their friends Roger, and Melvin who is a bit of a "Wad". When they listen to Buddy Rich on the radio, David immediately falls in love with the sound and wants to learn to play the drums and become the rhythm section of his own big band swing Band. His dreams are put on hold though when his family is reported as communist spies right in the middle of the Red Scare.

Allison Mae Carter is 16. She lives in a orphanage. She lives there with 49 other girls. When Allison was 7 her mom found out that her husband was cheating on he with another guy. 3 weeks later Allison found her on the bathroom floor dead. She committed suicide. Well that's what shes been told. Eventually her soon to be stepdad moved in. After the death Allison would not talk to anybody. She was not paying attention at school and would just sit in the corner of the classroom by herself. On top of that her dad started to abuse her daily. It got so bad she had to go to the hospital twice. Even though she hated her stepdad he still liked her. He just didn't know what to do. When Allison turned 8 her dad sent her to an orphanage . Now she lives in Miami Florida.
