The day that Elizabeth turns 20, she is pressured into a loveless marriage by her strict, business-oriented, father. The union of the two families and companies could mean a fat profit for Elizabeth's dad, and she feels like she has no other choice.
Eli, her new husband, seems to be very distant and unhappy. He never acted too eager to marry her either, so to him, Elizabeth is nothing more than the beautiful wife on his arm that smiles for pictures to make him look good.
