What happens when you're in the wrong place at the wrong time? She is just at the beginning of her year-long world travels when she falls into the hands of him - an Italian mafia Don driven by the thirst for answers and revenge. When there is something else thrown into the mix - obsession. But is it the healthy kind? -- "You're a psychopath. You're sick!" His jaw clenches and with a sudden burst of rage, he lashes out. His hand collides with the nearby table, where the untouched food lies on top, sending it crashing to the ground in a cacophony of splintering wood and shattering ceramic. "You've brought nothing but trouble since the moment you walked into my life," he seethes, his voice dripping with venom. Each word is punctuated by the clenching of his fists, his knuckles turning white with tension. "And now you have the audacity to stand here and fucking disrespect me like that?" I flinch at the force of his words, the reality of my situation crashing down on me like a tidal wave. My heart pounds in my chest, each beat a reminder of the perilous ground I stand on. "I walked into your life?! You took me away from mine!" My voice quivers with anger, my hands trembling at my sides. The tension crackles in the air like electricity, a volatile energy that threatens to ignite at any moment. His eyes narrow into icy slits, his features contorted with fury. "I feel sorry for you. I'm probably the most excitement you've ever had in your pathetic life. You're nothing but a spoiled little girl, playing at being tough," he snarls. I meet his glare with a steely resolve, refusing to let his words pierce the armour I've built around myself. "At least I'm not a soulless bastard who gets off on power and control," I retort, my voice dripping with disdain. "You're nothing but a coward hiding behind a facade of strength." --

Seventeen year old Skylar Midnight always thought she'd been an ordinary girl; she knows exactly what to expect when it comes to a person with causalities. Going through high school without much of a second glance, she knows more than anyone else that life is hard, and sometimes it doesn't get any better. It's always been that way for her, ever since the night her mom allegedly died in a car accident when she was only four years old. After that, nothing was ever the same. She lived her life in constant wondering how different things would've been if her mom was still alive. Hoping her father was always a part of her life; Skylar never really knew what love was. For over a hundred years, humanity has lived in fear of the monsters that roam the streets, lurking in the drains below. Women and their daughters hide, protected in their homes, while men take their sons through the world, teaching them the responsibilities of having a family to feed and dangers to avoid. No one leaves the home unless it's essential, and most of the world prefers it that way. Until one girl spends her days perched on her window seat, looking down at the world below and dreaming of a different life. Her eyes are always drawn to the dark, ominous drains in the street, the ones that often blink open to swallow and person whole. One day, that person is her little brother, snatched right in front of her from their arms of their father and gone forever. When a person is snatched, they never return, and life goes on without them. But she can't accept that. Breaking all the rules, all the things she's ever known, she braves the world outside her little townhouse and goes on a mission into the darkness to find her brother. Only, it's soon her that becomes the one lost to the drains. To survive she must rediscover her world, and in the process, rediscover herself. She will be reunited with old friends, gain new ones, find out deeper secrets about her past than she ever could have imagined, and learn that the world is even more corrupt than she always thought. *** This story contains sexist ideology, mention of cheating, some gruesome scenes, and a whole lot of monsters and darkness. It isn't overly mature... there isn't much explicit language or sexual scenes, but there is a bit of violence, so just keep that in mind... and despite all that negativity, ENJOY!
