Leila was always that girl who thought school was easy. She strived for 4.0's and got there easily. She played 2 instruments, and followed the role of a typical, nerdy, band-geek, sort of cool girl. Her friends ranged from strange, to kind, to athletic. Anyone and everyone, except the off-limits. Who were the off-limits? In Leila's group the off limits were the popular people- the major football jocks, the cheerleaders, the POMS team. But she couldn't help but understand where this came from. How this happened. So she took her chances, and dove into the deep end.

The thing about being a DUFF is, you don't always know you're one until someone points it out-like a big, awkward elephant in a room full of tiny, graceful gazelles. The acronym stands for "Designated Ugly Fat Friend," but if you've been crowned a DUFF, you probably already knew that. And if you didn't... well, congrats-ignorance really is bliss. Harper Grant didn't exactly volunteer for the title of DUFF, but then again, no one does. It's not like she woke up one day and thought, "Hey, I'd love to be the poster child for 'not pretty enough to date but funny enough to keep around.'" But high school has a twisted way of assigning roles you never auditioned for. One minute, you're just Harper-quiet, a bit out of the school norm, minding your own business-and the next, you're 'Harper the Whale,' the girl people avoid like the flu because they're afraid your unpopularity is contagious. For Harper, being the DUFF of Glendale High wasn't about being hideous or repelling people with bad hygiene. She had a cute face, thank you very much, and she could work a pair of jeans like nobody's business. No, her DUFF status was all about perception : Carly Chase's perception to be exact. One snide comment from the queen bee, and suddenly, Harper's slightly curvy body and quiet demeanor were grounds for social exile. And because high school social rules are about as logical as trying to solve a Rubik's Cube blindfolded, no one wanted to risk befriending the 'whale.' So, there Harper was : the designated outsider in a sea of perfectly coiffed and curated teens, doomed to be the unremarkable backdrop to everyone else's homecoming selfies. But if there's one thing no one warned her about being a DUFF, it's this : sometimes, being on the outside gives you the clearest view of what's really going on inside. And Harper? She was about to do a lot more than just watch.

*Completed* "I just want to know why." I say as I turn over, trying to find his figure through the dark of my room. "Why what?" He asks. "Why you're being so nice to me." I say quietly, vulnerability seeping into my words. "How we even became friends." He sighs, "I want to know how." I scrunch my brow. "How what?" His response is soft, the opposite of his sarcastic personality. "How you don't see it." ******* Reagan Holt was about as average as a high school student could be. She didn't play any sports, didn't participate in the popular activities, and wasn't the girl all the boys chased after. All except one boy. He wrote her a letter every week. Each letter described something new for him to love about her. Whether it was how beautiful her laugh was or how his heart swelled with every smile she gave, he never failed to write how he felt. So the two should be together, right? That's the way Reagan wants it, but there's just one problem. He signs his letters "Love, Anonymous." Now add an obnoxious, conceited, sex god into the equation and you get a teenage girl confused on who really loves her. The sweet, tender written anonymous lover, or the cocky, ignorant asshole? -REVIEWS- "You create such wonderful characters and I can't wait to see what happens next!" VampireSa5m41993 "Thank you for wonderful dogs and little brothers and eccentrically hormonal best friends!" -Nat-Attack "I am totally hooked on this book!" nbazinet "I love the way the story flows and that you have really roundabout characters. It's as if they're real while I'm reading!" life_is_beautiful115 "Your work is literally art." lemonsun123 "Every time I read this book it just makes me smile." Nicooole97 Cover by: -winterr

"The moon's really beautiful, if you think about it," I blurted. "Yeah?" he asked, mild amusement and curiosity mingling in his voice. "Yeah," I confirmed. "It's just- there's something about the moon that's ethereal. I don't really know how to describe it, but it's a constant in life. You can't always see it, but you have to trust that it's out there somewhere. And when you can see it, it's all bright and shiny and overcomes the darkness." I paused, searching for the right words. "I don't know. I guess it's a reminder that there are good things out there, even if you can't see them... And it's cool to think that someone hundreds of miles away is staring at the exact same moon as you. It makes me feel not so alone in life." Turning my head, I saw him staring at me intently with a thoughtful look on his face. "Too deep for a Friday night?" I laughed nervously, feeling my face grow hot. And this was precisely why I didn't go to parties. He shook his head and seemed to snap out of his daze. "It was deep in a good way." *** SHE was quiet & left out.
