During the Napoleonic Wars, a young soldier, Andre Fournier, is separated form his troop and wanders in the snowy wasteland to a farmhouse. There, he sees a apple tree with a single fruit guarded by a child in a red coat. She promises to give him the apple if he will fine her mother and give her a charm: a silver toad with an emerald in its forehead. In exchange, her mother will give him a bag of gold. Andre accepts this wager, and finds more than he bargained for....
