The story continues in the sequel to Untrammeled. Five months after Norah & Ethan's departure, Eugene's quota is met, and is off the radar for months while Riley, Anton, and Milo stay behind. Riley distracts herself by establishing a new home for the safety of her new friends in New Mexico where they can monitor the EAV and any possible threat. But when Eugene decides to make a return as promised, Norah and Ethan show up days after with more Devines searching for safety. Meanwhile, Riley and Penelope's relationship begins to crumble, separating themselves as mothers and daughter to adversaries, leaving Riley exposed. The team decides to untie together when they discover that the EAV has acquired one of the most powerful beings that is willing to destroy the team inside out. Eugene finds himself questioning his and Riley's friendship as she begins to distance herself fighting multiple battles of her own. All while Norah and Milo struggle to mend their relationship and find forgiveness from within. Unity will be their biggest strength but distance with be their downfall as they watch their darkest fears come to life.
