"Appearances can be deceiving- especially if you're not looking hard enough."
This is a story about superheroes. Also, it isn't. I should know. I'm trapped in it.

***

Meet Jack. A stereotypical protagonist with a tragic backstory who discovers he has powers and uses them to save The City aided by his trusted friends- except he isn't.

What's the hushed-up secret the Government is keeping about The City- and why is it against a hero?

What's up with Jack's history teacher?

What exactly is his University hiding?

Why is there the occasional unnecessary reference?

How sinister are the skeletons lurking in his so-called friends' cupboards?

And which one of them is a cold-blooded murderer?

Secrets, secrets, everywhere- but the more he unravels, the closer he thinks he is to being free, the more Jack finds himself linked to forces outside his control and events he barely remembers, stuck in a fictional universe where, it would seem, everyone is against him.

For over a hundred years, humanity has lived in fear of the monsters that roam the streets, lurking in the drains below. Women and their daughters hide, protected in their homes, while men take their sons through the world, teaching them the responsibilities of having a family to feed and dangers to avoid. No one leaves the home unless it's essential, and most of the world prefers it that way. Until one girl spends her days perched on her window seat, looking down at the world below and dreaming of a different life. Her eyes are always drawn to the dark, ominous drains in the street, the ones that often blink open to swallow and person whole. One day, that person is her little brother, snatched right in front of her from their arms of their father and gone forever. When a person is snatched, they never return, and life goes on without them. But she can't accept that. Breaking all the rules, all the things she's ever known, she braves the world outside her little townhouse and goes on a mission into the darkness to find her brother. Only, it's soon her that becomes the one lost to the drains. To survive she must rediscover her world, and in the process, rediscover herself. She will be reunited with old friends, gain new ones, find out deeper secrets about her past than she ever could have imagined, and learn that the world is even more corrupt than she always thought. *** This story contains sexist ideology, mention of cheating, some gruesome scenes, and a whole lot of monsters and darkness. It isn't overly mature... there isn't much explicit language or sexual scenes, but there is a bit of violence, so just keep that in mind... and despite all that negativity, ENJOY!

"You ungrateful bitch. I keep a roof over your head, and this is the thanks I get?" "You could have killed her," I retort, trying to muster up confidence that I don't possess. "What if she goes to the cops, Dad? That bruise on her face is enough to get you arrested and charged with assault." "What? You mean when she tripped over the mess you made in the kitchen?" His smile is so wicked that it chills me to my core. "She ain't going to the cops. Hell, she'll probably be back here tomorrow." "You're a bastard," I whisper, tears filling my eyes. "No wonder Mom left! She probably couldn't bear to spend another second with-" I'm pushed to the floor. I scramble backwards as he approaches me, his cheeks scarlet with rage, his pupils the size of needle points. In fourteen years, I've never seen him this mad. I've really done it this time. -------------------- (COMPLETED) Life is hard when nowhere feels like home. For Layla Dodds, there is only one goal: survival. WARNING: CONTAINING AMOUNTS OF SASS PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN TO MANKIND In the city of NYC--- Ok. Hold up. First of all, New York City. What, are ya gonna assume everyone here knows what NYC is? Anyway, this is about two people. I can almost hear you rolling your eyes. Another cliché teen fiction with a bad boy and a good girl? Nope. This is about superheroes. I can still hear you rolling your eyes. Superheroes. Like in comic books? Like people with super speed and mutant powers? Yes. But this isn't about the fight they have. More about the lives they lead without the masks. But just keep in mind, people who live in the world have all different skin colours. Do not assume my characters are of one unless I state them explicitly. and diversity is welcome here in my novel! Anyhow, back to the story. Ever wonder where supervillains go after their fight with the hero? What about the other side of the story? It's not like they sit in their lair cackling all day and planning how to kidnap reporters. What about the lives they lead? And instead of just focusing on that, what if the superhero and the supervillain knew each other? I mean, can they see behind the mask? No, so their identities are secret. So what if the hero and villain were best friends? What if they were roommates? What if they were falling for each other? And what happens when they find out? Now, I assume you know all of these questions will be answered in this book. But hold on. It's going to take a while. You're in for a bumpy ride. And if any of you got any of the references in this description, give yourself a pat on the back. That is a beautiful thing. And if you can name all the references in this book, you truly are a gift to mankind. Fangirl out.
