"I didn't realise that I could miss something as much as I miss my innocence."

It's 1914, the world is at war, and it's unlike anything anyone has seen before. The men of cities and country towns are leaving for a cause much bigger than they realise.

20 year old Clancy Taylor is young, willing and determined to become a hero. His identical twin brother Ned, isn't easily persuaded but soon decided that protecting his brother is more important than a wedding.

Promised to the arrogant and cheating Hamish, Elsie O'Dwyer is eager to follow her true love to war as a nurse.

So, equipped with their mate Tom, their kit bags and the memories of home the boys make their way to the frontline of World War One.

No excitement.
No faith.
Barely any courage.

Follow the life of Clancy and his mates as they mature into people with the echoes of their youth muffled by rifle fire.

EXCERPT "Women like you shouldn't be a part of our society. Your rotten behaviours spoil the well groomed ladies to behave just like you whores! A shameless girl who got herself knocked up by an unknown person in her teen years, how disgusting, both you and your bastard son!" He sput scrunching up his face in disgust. "You're just a whore! And you're whoring with him as well!" Atuweni's hand landed across his cheek in a hot slap before she could stop herself as tears streamed down her cheeks. "You have no right! Absolutely no right to talk about me being shameless and disgusting because you're the most disgusting of us both! Dont bother talking about an unknown father because the father is very well known and he's an imbecile because you are the father of my son!" He staggered back shocked as her words sunk their meaning into his brain forcing him to be quiet. Atuweni clapped her hand over her mouth. She hadn't meant for that to come out. She hadn't meant for him to know. What had she done!?

Winter, 1917. Dorothy never really thought that war would take her older brother, but like so many others before him, Ian enlisted and departed Canada in khaki, leaving Dorothy to care for the youngest Gaston, Charlie. The return of her employer's son eats away at Dorothy: why should he, the rich man's son, the spoiled brat, be back home sleeping in his bed while her brother sleeps in the muck somewhere in France or Belgium? Robbie Monroe isn't the brat who ran off for a great adventure. Nearly deaf in one ear and deeply lonely, he is a man struggling to put his life back together after his time "over there," and Dorothy seems to be the only one he can talk to. She doesn't want to trust him but she can't help it, and Dorothy soon finds herself with something she didn't realize she desperately needed: a friend. Before the war's end, fate has one final reminder for Dorothy that happy endings don't always happen in real life, no matter how much she tells herself they can. Set in in the weeks before the 1917 Halifax Explosion, Shadows May Fall is a non-traditional World War I romance.
