A few months have passed since the Battle of Hogwarts and how do you help traumatized young adults who have witnessed and survived a war? You invite them back to the exact place of said war, of course.
Headmistress McGonagall has invited those who could not finish out their seventh year (or those who couldn't particularly attend their seventh year) back to finally finish their schooling at Hogwarts. This is intimidating for some but there is agreement that this could be beneficial. After all, if they could go through war together, how could anything else be worse?
McGonagall just wants a peaceful year after everything that went so wrong. She expects that the eighth years will learn to love one another after going through so much, and hopefully they can be of help to each other through their trauma.
She also might hope that two very lost, young men will find peace, however that may be.
