The first of a series of short stories that give some background to my fantasy world of the future. A world of shapeshifting animals and creatures previously thought to only exist in fairy tales. A world that the gods intended to be a harmonious existence between humans and animals, but not everyone has the same ideas in mind.
This story concerns the Tanuki and Kitsune, shapeshifting raccoons and foxes respectively, and the manipulative games they play with their new found powers.

Kitsune: ~Noun~ A Japanese Fox spirit, normally female, said to have powers such as shapeshifting and whose power is symbolized by the increase in the number of tails. Mikoto does not recall who she was before, only what is now. She has the parts of a fox, the shape even if she wishes and control over fire. Start Date: September 16, 2017 End Date: August 1st, 2018 Shapeshifting has always been around us but we've chosen to remain ignorant to the signs we've been left with. She struggles to understand why she of all people is put to lead the team's quest... and so do the others. Harper Magdalena has known she could shift into a bird since the age of five when she fell off the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. She'd never told a soul until one August day when a boy accidentally stumbled upon her shifting. When she's offered a place at Vale, she's amazed to learn she isn't as different as she thought. Lance Taylor is an arrogant boy who's known it was his destiny to go to Vale since he was able to walk. He's anxiously awaited the day of being assigned a team and quest. He can't wait for when he's chosen to lead his team through their quests... until he finds out he won't be. The team has a bumpy road ahead and if they can't learn to work together, they could very well fail the quest but much more is at stake than that.
