Newt didn't like to think about what his life was like before the maze. It was one thing he might have been happy to be left in the dark with, despite the obviously dire predicament he found himself looped into. He knew the Glade wasn't particularly safe, but he also knew it was the best they could hope for. He had accepted it as his home.
He was more than a little disheartened, at first, when the Greenie of the month didn't share the same, generic opinion as every other Glader in the maze.
