A poor farmer boy wants nothing to do with the Fire Army, especially after his brother was taken to be trained as a soldier. But when his family is killed by a group of soldiers, he joins a rogue Guardian, a servant girl, and a hermit bent on avenging the death of his wife on a quest to save Zorah. But some of his other allies surprise even him.
