A teenage thief absorbs the magic of an ancient dragon and must develop her new powers to prevent an oncoming genocide. 
 
In the land of Solaraas, magic is disappearing due to interracial breeding. Though Violian is a half-elf thief, she can't cast spells like a pureblood. That is until she is hired to steal an ancient artifact called a Maudline. When Violian accidentally absorbs the power of the Grey Maudline, she realizes that she can transform into a powerful grey dragon. But Violian isn't the only one who possesses this power.
 
 An army of purebloods is on the hunt to collect all ten Maudlines. With this power, they can rid Solaraas of its mixed-blooded people. To stop them, Violian must join forces with a handsome soldier, a cowardly prince, and a murderous mermaid. If Violian can't harness the powers of the grey beast, she and everyone she loves will be extinguished by genocide.
