This is my version of what could have happened in the depths of Ba Sing Se if Zuko had chosen to defect. I really don't know why there aren't more like this, it seems like one of the ultimate Zutara moments.

Book 2: Earth (Sokka x Reader Love Story)
Things had officially gone to shit. With the guilt of Princess Yue's death on (Y/n)'s mind, she finds it conflicting to come to terms with her feelings about Sokka. Paired with more shocking revelations, she realizes things aren't going to get easier for her. They learn to live with their choices and play with the hand the universe deals them, and that they cannot change what has happened. They go forward with the knowledge that they know better now. They keep walking, getting up when they fall. They let go of the fears of their pasts to become the best version of the person they are. Or, Aang plays match-maker against his friends, Katara has to keep cleaning up their messes, Sokka is more protective, (Y/n) is exhausted. Katara has been different since her mother's death. She buries herself in books and work, trying to distract from the pain. And Zuko's life is far from perfect. His mother is gone, his father is abusive, and his sister hates him. People seem to avoid him just because of the scar on his face. So when he gets dared to make Katara his girlfriend, saying if he did so he would get paid, he doesn't expect anything to come out of it. Then he begins to spend time with her and realizes maybe he wants something to come out of it. Now he needs to keep the dare a secret. What happens when Zuko's eighteenth birthday comes around, and the Gaang frantically compiles a birthday celebration? Probably disaster. Avatar: the Last Airbender Fanfiction Zuko x OC Makki is the twin sister of Sokka and the older sister of Katara. She is one of the last Southern water benders, along with her sister. At the age of ten, she lost her mother in a Fire Nation raid, right at the South Pole; all she has left is her mother's necklace, which Katara wears around her neck. After that, her father left to fight in the Hundred Year War, along with all the other grown warriors, and Makki and her siblings were put under the care of their Gran Gran. She grew up practicing her bending and helping Katara with all the chores, while their brother practiced his fighting skills and tried teaching the younger boys of their village. Makki's siblings followed their destiny of helping Aang master all four elements while Makki was stuck on a path with the Fire Nation Prince Zuko and his uncle Iroh. The three of them would cross paths with Aang, Katara, and Sokka, but Makki would always have trouble reuniting with her siblings, so she would try her best to show Zuko the right path. The Hunger Games had been a tradition for 100 years. And that year wasn't any different. Each district gave up two teenagers for the Games, one bender and one nonbender. They would fight to the death to see which district was the best that year. However, this year, something was different. The people in the Games were different this year. And they were ready to storm the Capitol at nightfall. --- Katara hated her life. Everything about it sucked, but there was nothing she could do to make it better. And then it got even worse when she was chosen to be in the Hunger Games. She was the bender from District 4, and the nonbender that got chosen was - get this - her brother, Sokka. Their lives couldn't get any better, right? When they made it to the Capitol, they realized how unskilled they were. Most of the other people had an unfair advantage to the Games - they had been training for it their whole lives. Katara was terrified of the Games. However, there was a certain anger growing in her. She wouldn't die in the Games. No, she would live just to spite everyone who doubted her. That spite spurred her through the Games. It gave her the drive to take care of the kid from District 10 who was also doubted. It gave her the drive to go along with the uprising, to storm the Capitol at nightfall.
