Death had followed Rowena Ashbay her entire life. At eight years old, after narrowly surviving an attack from a mountain lion, she accidentally murders her parents. All she had to do was touch them, and they fell dead to the ground.

Terrified of her own powers, Rowena secludes herself, never allowing herself to touch another person in fear that her powers would take another life. For ten years, she lives alone on the streets, not daring to trust anyone.
