The purpose of fasting:
Fasting provides an exacting exercise in self-discipline.It strengthens and deepens our faith. It honours the sending down of the Qu'ran, which took place in the month of Ramadan. It makes the faster realize how it feels like to be hungry and thirsty. It makes him appreciate the needs of the poor. Fasting develops self control.It helps us to overcome greed, selfishness,anger and laziness. It helps us to control passions and desires. As the Qu'ran points out,fasting has been widely practised at all time of mans history. Its main aim is spiritual purification.
The true fasting:
To go hungry and thirsty while ignoring the spirit of fasting carries no value in the sight of Allah's Messenger(S.A.W) has said,(If one does not give up lying and acting by it,Allah does not require hime to give up eating and drinking.) (Bukhari)

(Fasting is a shield,so when one of you is fasting he should not use foul talk. If someone abuses him or insults him, let him say:(I am fasting, I am fasting,) (Bukhari)When we observe the fast, it is essential that we should keep ours eyes,ears,tongue,mind,hands and feet free from sins. We must guard our tongue and observe silence. We should occupy it with remembrance of Allah and with the recitation of the Qu'ran. Backbiting and lying lower the quality of the fast.
