jayla was bullied at school and rumors was spread about her doing something that she never did. But things was worst at home. Her step dad abused her and also raped her and her mom knew all about it.
When her dad died of an heartache when she was 15, her mom turned evil. She never cared about Jayla, she only sent her to school and Jayla had to make money her own way to afford clothes and food.
David Brewster, Jr is 25 year old who lives by himself in the bad part of the city (the hood). He been arrested before and after getting out , he been changing.
David dropped out of school as a senior to be a drug dealer, because that's was the only way that he could've kept money in his pocket. For everyone to know David in the hood, he pretty much ran it.

They acknowledge one another, they see each other around all of the time and they don't really hit it off at first.
