Long story short he escaped no thanks to Bonnie Bennett, and as soon as he did he wanted to merge with his loving twin sister Jo to get more powerful but his pesky little brother Luke took her place, however Kai being Kai overpowered him and got the ability to produce and retain his own magic. 

After that he left, whatever torture he was going to be put through by the 'Save Elena Gang' never happened.  

Kai wanted a new start, so he's first thought was New Orleans where he heard is a city for the supernatural.
