Mueri is a town known for two things: it's oceanfront, and the dark and mysterious woods that haunted its rear. The girl in town, not quite new but not quite old, is the least interesting thing in town. Of course, like every good tale, that meant that something incredible was about to occur. Winnifred Ridgemount's aunt is an empath who warns of death. Winnie is seeing shadows in her room, bodies are turning up dead, and everyone at work is scared of opening the blinds. Esmond Noir is the only one at work who doesn't live in the dark, and she seeks refuge in his old soul. She cannot continue to seek refuge, however, once her best friend turns up dead and her aunt is screaming that Mueri is a walking graveyard. Mueri is hiding death, danger and magical creatures within its picturesque nature, and Winnifred Ridgemount is going to die because of it.

Alyssa has forgotten her brush with Death, but David's words have stayed with her: prepare. For what? She doesn't know. For a year, she's trained and become an almost undefeated boxer, putting all of her grief for the boy she loved and lost into being the best fighter. She's fast, strong, fearless. Now strange things have started happening, and she thinks she's losing her mind. How is she supposed to fight against what she can't see? Her mother's mind is clouded with a darkness no medicine can fix, and an ancient shadow circles the town, and Alyssa knows it's somehow related to her. Gifted in ways she doesn't understand, she's thrust into a triangle of devotion and danger-an angelic protector who refuses to leave her alone, a boy whose hands have held hers through the nights, and a darkness that wants only to make her surrender. In a race that runs as fast as her fists, Alyssa must choose who to trust and how much of herself to give-because the only way to stop a thing that feeds on light may be to become what it fears most. Will she save her mother and keep her humanity, or the secrets hasn't discovered cost her everything?
