The Kingdom of Cards, or Acerbus Regnum, as the ancients dubbed the land, is ruled by fear and oppression. The Council of Faces rules the land with silent threats and the fear of 'the darkness' the shadowy unknown, a mysterious power outside the ancient walls. A bigger problem may be lurking within the sanctuary. No one is over the age of thirty. On your thirtieth birthday you disappear. Some don't even last that long. *** Alice,or Ace as she is more commonly known, is the Jack of hearts, the champion of her people. She was selected to represent the hearts in the never-ending battle against the darkness, or so she was told. The problem is no one is willing to help her, at least anyone who has any clues. She also has some bad feelings about what's happening inside the kingdom.She will do anything to fulfill her objective, even if it means putting up with obnoxious boys and unhelpful rulers. *** The first book in the Castle of Cards series.
