Everyone has a soulmate. It's been that way practically since the dawn of human existence.
Each mark is colorful, unique. It's always of something about your soulmate, ranging from something they like to their personality. It is also the place your soulmate first touches you. It goes dull when your soulmate dies, the deepest shades of grey.
Everyone thought Patrick's mate had died, as his mark was dull the minute he was born. Everyone was right if you put it in technical terms.
Why? Well, it might just be because Patrick's soulmate is Death.
