Henrik Mikaelson was dead, killed by werewolves. However when Esther turned his siblings, she figured out a way to bring him back as well, and it worked by using dark magic. 

And with that he came back, and he was better then ever, immortal just like his siblings. 

The trauma of being killed made him cautious of people and when he feels threatened his magic defends him.

Kol and Henrik were close, closer then anyone could even imagine. While Rebekah, Elijah and Klaus were always together, Kol and Henrik became each other's protecters.

When Klaus called Henrik to come Mystic Falls he goes because he knows that Kol will be there, waiting for him.
