She was used to having color, she could barely remember a time without it. But nobody could know. When you're born into this world it's nothing but black and white, waiting for somebody else to paint your canvas. Your pupils picking up the ability to see every color across the spectrum only after finding their counterparts. Finding your 'soul mate' was common throughout your twenties but not heard of much earlier. Alice had ran into hers the second day of 5th grade. And so the two had created a set of rules in the pretence of wanting to grow up. 1. Never tell anybody that you can see color 2. Don't initiate anything beyond friendship until both participants have achieved their goals. 3. If you catch feelings keep them away till later 4. Always be supportive of your best friends (soulmates) choices

"You're the color to my black and white world" has become literal in a future, dystopian society. Scientists have found a way to make people unable to see color until they meet their true soulmate. They felt as that not being able to see color would stop civil unrest and discriminatory barriers, and by the time they met their soulmate people would be mature enough to make proper societal decisions. Linnea, the story's main character, believes her childhood best friend is her soulmate, but she soon learns that there are tricks to this color system. Sometimes, color can be falsely seen in faint hues and sometimes, the person you thought was your soulmate really isn't. When she meets Jade, she learns that perhaps your soulmate isn't exactly the person you imagined.
