A short story challenge. Requirements: It has to be a war against an enemy whose identity your MC doesn't know, and fought in a constantly changing environment. This could be as simple as extremely mobile warfare, but it could be something a lot more mysterious. And the MC must also have a goal that's entirely separate from the war.

The Taste of Iron di Easterhead

Humanity is struggling to survive in a world that's no longer theirs. Liv, a scavenger who leads missions into the city looking for food, medicine, and iron, is struggling to keep her team alive-and to follow the increasingly desperate orders from the elders. They haven't left the safety of the Scraper in years. The danger of the forest isn't ingrained in their bones like it is in hers. But telling them that is meaningless. And when a mission leads them into a trap and Liv wakes up on the wrong side of the tree line-alone, disoriented, and for some reason not dead-she learns the forest doesn't just kill people or take their souls. It changes them. Fighting the creatures of the forest is pointless. But at least it's fun. Murderbot meets The Cruel Prince My entry for onc2025, based on prompt 125: I must not fear. A young woman wakes up in the hospital, with no memories other than the fact she had just been horribly injured in a fight, and she has superpowers. It's hard to be surprised by such news when it is the only memory you possess. Superpowers are just a fact of life at that point. The superpowers news turned out to be quite original for the rest of the world, which was entirely unaware someone like her existed at all. There is, however, an underground world of others like her, a criminal empire working toward something she had been trying to stop. But with no knowledge of what the villainous plan was, who these criminals were, or how to properly use her powers, things seem grim. She knows she is the only one who can stop them, and the only backup she has is a man who claims to have been her friend from before the accident. Will she be able to train her powers up, and stop the devious master plan before it's too late?
