Japan, 1866. The peaceful years of the Edo period are drawing to a close. The shogunate faces ruthless criticism from the public regarding foreign policies, especially from imperial loyalists. In an attempt to give the impression of stability and good relations between the emperor and the shogun, a delegation from Joseon was invited for, what the shogunate claimed, 'very timely' cultural exchanges.

Liu Yiyun, disguised as a man, is captain of the 2nd unit of the Shinsengumi, an elite samurai police force stationed in the imperial capital of Kyoto. Jung Soojung is the daughter of the chief Joseon diplomat and is also infamously known for being the first female Bureau Artist of the royal court. This is their story.
