Když je tělo generála Mowbraye nalezeno v jídelní jeho venkovního sídla, přichází na řadu inspektor Ainsworth a vyšetřování.
Inspektor ví, že vrah musí být někdo z vedení firmy Mowbray nebo někdo z lidí přítomných v domě v čas vraždy. Společně s řešením vraždy inspektor rozplétá i snúšku záhad okolo firmy a dozvídá se o rivalitě panující ve vedení.
