The story focuses on the conflict between Mexican Americans and Texas Rangers. It follows Tobias's struggle with what happened to his family. He joined the revolution to find some sort of justice or revenge. Initially he is so pent up with anger that all he wants to do is fight. Ira, a Texas Ranger, struggles with staying true to only doing good and helping those in need. He struggles with another Texas Ranger named William who only wants to do harm and stoke the hatred between the two groups. Ira and Tobias must each do their part to try to bring peace and stop the endless slaughtering of Mexicans and Texans.Todos os Direitos Reservados

Upon returning home, John faces difficulties transitioning to civilian life and coping with PTSD. However, he finds support in his community and from strangers who offer unexpected kindness. He seeks forgiveness from his estranged wife and works to rebuild their relationship. Eventually, John begins to find a sense of purpose and learns to cope with his PTSD through therapy. He reflects on the legacy of the war and the impact it has on the nation and its people, while also contemplating the lessons he has learned about war, sacrifice, and humanity.

Then there's the risk of eternal suffering and not to mention the grief that comes with watching loved ones die and having to leave behind much of what you once new. However with Tobias' logic running at an all time low, he struggles to see through his ever-growing love for Lathaniel. He wants to stay with Lathan forever, regardless of risks or suffering. He doesn't want to leave Lathaniel with the pain of not having the love of his life around, he doesn't want that for his husband. Now Lathaniel is faced with a dilemma. Turn Tobias and run the risk of losing him early or him being desensitised to love because of grief or don't turn him and watch him slowly and painfully fade away. It seems clear what he should do, but it's a tougher decision to actually make than say.

To maintain stability, the faction leaders decide to return to the faction system. Because of this, the sixteen-year-olds that chose that year are sent back to their former factions for nine months. Tris falls into a state of depression after the war and her impromptu breakup that occurred at the end of it, and returning back to Abnegation--to the same house as her traitor brother--doesn't help. Tobias remains in Dauntless, but while he isn't exactly despondent, he does feel out of place. He doesn't fit in and cannot go on with normal life after everything that happened. Then, Choosing Day arrives. And history definitely does not repeat itself when Tris goes through the initiation process with her old friends and enemies, her ex-boyfriend, and the new sixteen-year-olds, while citizens of Chicago are mysteriously dying.
