There are strange things threatening the United Confederation. And, somehow, society has ruled that every family must do their part. That is why one member of each registered family in this glorious nation must either volunteer or be chosen to participate in the country's protection. They then become their family's Representant. There is, at least, one benefit to this process: the mystical Esprit, a mysterious force contained in a pendant or charm. Each familial Representant receives their own Esprit, who serves to protect their Representant and aide them in their efforts. Falyn Anner has just experienced the heart-wrenching loss of her older sister, Laurel, her family's Representant. Yet only three days later, the Service is knocking on her family's door looking for her replacement. Ready to do anything in memory of her sister's sacrifice and to protect her greiving parents, Falyn steps up to be the new Representant of the family. Her sister's Esprit becomes her own. But as time passes, and Falyn grows ever stronger and better through training, she discovers that both she and her Esprit have secrets unknown; secrets that are better left untold to anyone but each other. Soon, Falyn's world in turned inside out, and she barely knows how to cope. There are strange things threatening the United Confederation. But something no one can even imagine is coming.

Hemmett d'Espers-Fitzhugh is sick and tired of school at the Interspiritual Academy of Portales Espirituales. Most of the students are half-ghosts like him--either his own cousins or kids he's known all his life--and he's BORED. His twin sister Aether acts like she's so perfect all the time. His parents--a spirit and a mortal--don't know what to do with him. Everyone but Hemmett can communicate telepathically, and his cousins have great control over their spectricity, while Hemmett keeps accidentally zapping everyone. The only thing he's really good at is spectral script, but the mortal teacher at school keeps teaching elementary lessons that drive Hemmett crazy. Plus, Hemmett's terribly curious about the mortal world--especially mortal girls. When he decides to go on a spirit tour by himself to the mortal world, his encounters with the mortals and ghosts of the town just might shake things up a bit. But when he stirs up some trouble in the personage of an ancient hostile spirit, it will take every bit of talent Hemmett has to keep the spirit from destroying the town.
